In this episode of the Peak Performance Selling podcast, Sarah, Best-Selling Author of Selling Without Sleaze and Founder of Women's Wealth Formula, emphasizes the importance of selling without sleaze. Sarah encourages salespeople to sell in their own style and comfort zone, rather than following a script blindly or doing things out of character. She gives an example of a salesperson who was instructed to ask a woman business owner if her husband owned the business, which was inappropriate and offensive. Sarah stresses the importance of protecting customer relationships and not selling them short for a quick buck. She also notes that self-awareness is key in avoiding sleazy sales tactics and attracting the right customers who align with your selling style. The conversation then shifts to the importance of setting boundaries and finding balance in sales and life. Sarah emphasizes the need for sellers to show up as themselves, rather than trying to model themselves after someone else, which can lead to mental health and performance issues in the long run. She suggests setting boundaries and guardrails around your life to show up fully in a sales role while also enjoying your life outside of work. Sarah also discusses the importance of setting the right expectations from the beginning of the sales relationship and being accessible without sacrificing boundaries. She compares sales to dating, emphasizing the need to set the right expectations and boundaries from the beginning to avoid issues down the line. Jordan and Sarah discuss the struggle of setting boundaries and the importance of doing so for mental health and avoiding negative consequences. Sarah suggests being clear and upfront about boundaries from the beginning to avoid customers expecting more than what was agreed upon. Overall, Sarah advocates for a more authentic and ethical approach to sales that prioritizes customer relationships and respects boundaries.
PEAK PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS
SARAH: SETTING EXPECTATIONS FROM THE BEGINNING AND ENFORCING BOUNDARIES LATER ON
"But if they're having a crisis every weekend, that boundary needs to be there. It's easier to set the boundary from the beginning than enforce one later on."
JORDAN: STRUGGLING WITH SETTING BOUNDARIES AND THE NEGATIVE IMPACT OF NOT SETTING THEM
"I think that's a really smart thought is how do we set these boundaries? Because that's something that I know I struggle with personally. I'm not good about boundary setting. I want to be the people pleaser. And I have seen that show up negatively in my life that it usually doesn't come the first time or the second time, but the third, 4th, 5th time that I got somebody that says oh yeah, we have 30 minutes, can we do 2 hours?"
